IP vs. Analog Security Cameras: Which Is Right for Your Business?

The basic difference

Analog cameras send a video signal over coax cable to a recorder. IP cameras are small networked computers that send digital video over the same kind of cabling as your computers. That one difference drives most of the trade-offs.

Where IP wins

  • Much higher resolution, so you can actually identify people and details
  • Smarter features, like motion zones and alerts
  • Runs on your existing network cabling, often with power over the same cable
  • Easier to expand and manage centrally

Where analog still fits

  • Lower upfront cost per camera
  • Simple, proven, and fine when you already have coax in the walls
  • Good enough when you only need a basic deterrent

What most businesses choose

For a new system, IP is almost always the better long-term choice: the image quality and flexibility are worth it, and the cabling doubles as part of your network. Analog mainly makes sense when you are reusing existing wiring or keeping costs to a bare minimum.
