Co-Managed IT: When You Have Internal IT but Need Backup

What co-managed means

Co-managed IT is a partnership: your internal IT person or team keeps running day-to-day, and an outside provider works alongside them, filling gaps rather than taking over. It is not all-or-nothing.

Who it is for

  • A one-person IT department that is stretched too thin to cover everything
  • A team that is strong in some areas but wants specialist help in others, like security
  • A business that wants coverage for nights, weekends, and vacations
  • A company growing faster than its IT staff can keep up with

What the outside team handles

The split is flexible. Often the provider takes on the heavy or specialized work, monitoring, patching, security, backups, and after-hours coverage, so the internal team can focus on the projects and people closest to the business.

Why it works

Your internal person keeps the context and relationships they have built, while gaining a bigger team, better tools, and someone to call when things get busy or complicated. Nobody gets replaced; everyone gets backup.
