Cloud vs. On-Site Video Storage for Security Cameras

The two ways to store footage

Your cameras have to record somewhere. That is either an on-site recorder (an NVR or DVR sitting in a closet) or the cloud (footage sent to a secure data center over the internet). Each has real trade-offs.

On-site storage

  • Lower ongoing cost once the recorder is bought
  • Footage stays in your building
  • But if the recorder is stolen, damaged, or fails, the footage can go with it
  • Remote access depends on your own setup being configured securely

Cloud storage

  • Footage is safe off-site, even if the hardware is stolen or damaged
  • Easy, secure access from anywhere
  • Automatic retention and updates
  • But it costs a monthly fee and uses upload bandwidth

Often the answer is both

Many businesses land on a hybrid setup: record locally for fast, full-resolution access, and back up important footage to the cloud so a stolen recorder does not erase the evidence. The right mix depends on how long you need to keep footage and how much upload speed you have.
